TARBERT (LOCH FYNE) HARBOUR AUTHORITY

Following this year’s public meeting, the Chairman of Tarbert (Loch Fyne) Harbour Authority presented the Annual Review for 2024–25—an important reflection on a year of achievements, challenges, and forward momentum. With half of the 2025–26 trading year already underway, the review offered both a look back at progress made and a look ahead at the future direction of the harbour.

Annual Meeting 2025

The Chairman opened by noting that 2024–25 was a successful year financially, with income rising 6.5% and the Authority maintaining a strong balance sheet of £3.45M. Although some operating costs increased faster than income, THA remains resilient and focused on long-term stability. However, the Chairman expressed concern about the pressures facing the fishing industry, emphasising the need for deeper engagement with local fishermen to understand how THA can better support this essential part of Tarbert’s economy.

Significant attention was also given to the marina, where berth-holder numbers and visitor nights saw a small decline, linked mainly to the lack of a modern lift-out facility. THA confirmed its commitment to delivering a new slipway, expanded hard standing, and a full lift-out service, which will support both leisure and commercial users. Customer feedback remained extremely positive, with 96% of visitors satisfied or very satisfied with their experience.

Across the harbour estate, a number of major infrastructure projects progressed, including planning approval for the new slipway and the Community Activity & Watersports Hub. Improvements on the Fish Quay continued, and construction began on the new Earra Gael viewing platform, an expanded, high-quality public space developed in partnership with Argyll & Bute Council. Work also advanced on the Sculpture Trail and future plans for the Old Boatyard, which is set to become a community amenity space in 2026.

Operationally, the harbour saw varied activity across fishing, leisure, aquaculture, and shipping. Ferry disruptions during the year led to a notable drop in visitors and associated village income, but preparations continue for the introduction of the new all-electric ferry in 2028. Aquaculture activity increased significantly, while community festivals, yacht racing events, and visitor services all benefitted from strong support from the Harbour Team.

The Chairman emphasised the Authority’s renewed commitment to community engagement, following a constructive public meeting earlier in the year. THA will reinstate the Consultation Group and increase communication with residents and stakeholders throughout 2025–26.

The review closed with thanks to the entire THA staff team, whose hard work has enabled another year of progress.

The Chairman reaffirmed the Board’s vision: to ensure Tarbert Harbour continues to help the village be a wonderful place to live, work, visit, and enjoy, now and into the future.
